Winter Reading

Holiday Book Bingo

Play Lit League’s book bingo with your children over winter break. Each square poses a new reading challenge. Complete challenges together for fun, or print a card for multiple players and make it a competition. Caregivers with reluctant readers might even use the bingo card as a reading incentive chart. Consider giving readers a small reward once an entire row is completed.

Winter Poems

Cuddle up with your readers for some holiday season fun with these classic winter poems. You can add to the experience by making your own hot cocoa and enjoying it while you sit somewhere cozy and read!

Read trickier poems twice and ask readers what they imagine as you read. Consider pairing with an art activity. Little readers need to practice visualizing the written word, and drawing poems is a great (and fun!) way to practice this skill.

Acts of Selflessness

Think of ways you can give back to others this holiday season. You and your family might bring cookies to an elderly neighbor, volunteer your time at a soup kitchen, spread cheer by caroling in person or virtually, raise money for a worthy cause, or donate old clothes and toys to those in need. These selfless acts of giving will help make our world a better place! Want to do more?  Use our Community Helper sheet to brainstorm ways to improve your community.

Pioneer Paper Star Garland

“Ma brought out two long strips of brown wrapping-paper that she had saved. She folded them, and she showed Mary and Laura how to cut tiny bits out of the folded paper with the scissors. When each unfolded her paper, there was a row of stars.” – On the Banks of Plum Creek, Laura Ingalls Wilder

We love this paper craft from our partners at LittleHouseonThePrairie.com. Head to their site for more book-themed activities and pioneer inspired fun!

Compliment Cards

It feels wonderful to both give and receive compliments. Cut out these compliment cards and have your child fill them out. They can be delivered to the recipients in person, sent in a photo , or read aloud in a video. Compliment cards are a marvelous tool to help reset siblings after a quarrel and are a great way to practice kindness after reading a kindness-themed book.

Reading Resolutions

Use Lit League’s Reading Resolution sheet to plan out an exciting new year of reading. Set reading goals regarding book choices and reading habits. We’ve also included a log where readers can keep track of the books they read in the new year.
